God Went Walking

God first walked in the cool of the garden with man,

Earthly paradise; soon to be forsaken.

When first father and first mother ate

Fruit from that forbidden tree, they hid

At the sound of the voice of God calling to man

‘Where are you?’

Man from garden to wilderness was expelled

And through many dark years in the waste he wandered,

Scratching from the thorns and thistles food to eat,

Midst flood, famine, slavery, plauge, and war

Yet still the voice of God called to man

‘Where are you?’

Man hid himself behind created idol’s mask,

Covered himself with blood of sacrifices,

Sorry for wayward hands but not wayward hearts,

Ashamed to be found naked in this place of exile,

Trying to drown out the voice of God calling to man

‘Where are you?’

Then God a new work of creation performed,

He left his home above in paradise,

And wearing the rags of homeless exile,

Into the wilderness went walking,

Crying out with man’s voice to man

‘Where are you?’

Where can man flee, when to his last refuge

Comes the Man called ‘God with us’.

Not the God we wanted, not a deaf, dumb, mute stone.

For a speaking God one last thing remains,

To silence the voice of God calling to man

‘Where are you?’

Now death weeps, doomed to die,

No more from the dust to rise.

Man doomed to exile, no more!

Sin crushed by God’s own Word

In one speaking the words of God

‘Here I am’

Merry Christmas!
